This week’s art class was painting a subject and stylising it with a native art style. I chose an old glass vase and the patterns from a Guatemalan ornament that my daughter gave me last year. I struggle with still life and this was the second week we had to do it. I did this in watercolour but maybe it would have been easier in acrylic. Either way it wasn’t a subject I found very satisfying. It’s just a demonstration of what can be done. Continue reading Guatemalan Art
I decided to name this ‘Mr Wise – A Owl’ from a clip I saw either from a movie or a TV show some years ago called ‘Phoneshop – Mr Wise (A Owl)’ that my daughter Catherine enjoyed watching. Since this painting is for her I wanted to give it this title. Continue reading Mr Wise – A Owl
I missed last week’s art class which was still life. We had to use an ornament, elderflowers and fruit. I chose to make up my own picture by just painting one object at a time and creating a sort of botanical example of several types of wild flowers. I chose a black mixed media and used watercolour. Continue reading A Touch of Summer
I loved visiting this beautiful nature reserve called Rantitoto Island just off the coast across from Auckland. I visited my daughter who has now emigrated to New Zealand and this was one placeI wanted to see. I liked this particular shot from a photo I took because of the colours in the water and all the different textures of the lava and unique vegetation that grows there. I used watercolour and a touch of Fauvism to create a different effect. Continue reading View From Rangitoto Island, New Zealand
The second of two paintings in watercolour of Hunstanton Cliffs this time using a different technique. I used a 10mm angular flat brush to create the rippling effect of the sea. I used the same technique for the cliffs but vertical patterns as well as horizontal. I used yellow ochre, vermillion, dark crimson, violet, ultramarine, dark green, raw umber and yellow. Continue reading Hunstanton Cliffs 2
A second attempt with this amazing actor using just two colours in acrylic – Payne’s Gray and Titanium White. I always begin with the eyes as for me they are the windows of the soul and if they look right and I can capture the essence of the person, then the rest will surely follow and I can continue in the knowledge that at least if the eyes are right the rest will usually turn out how I want it. However, that really isn’t how it works out as I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to … Continue reading Eric Porter 2
Eric Porter was and still is one of my favourite actors of all times. At the age of sixteen I watched him play Soames Forsyte in The original Forsyte Saga. I challenged myself to do this portrait in just three … Continue reading Eric Porter
This week’s project for online art class was Hunstanton Cliffs, a place I’ve visited on many occasions. Great subject for painting and when I saw this was our work for this week, I was really pleased. It was great fun … Continue reading Hunstanton Cliffs
